"The first contemporary spelling of Peerless". Living (and working?) at Willett's Farm, Cowden between 1779 and 1781. When he married in 1790 he was of Withyham. In 1841 he was a labourer, living at Swaylands, Penshurst; in 1851 also a labourer but living with his son John at St.Leonard's on Sea. At other times he was described as a tollgate keeper (Penshurst?) and, at his death, a yeoman.

Eight children of George & Jane Peerless were baptised at Penshurst between 1823 and 1838. In 1851 Census he was living at Saints Hill, Penshurst with his wife and their daughter Fanny. In 1871 Census he was living at Penshurst with his wife and their grand-daughter Mary J Peerless (14,b.Ashurst). In 1881 Census he was a widower living at Redleaf Lodge, Leigh with his daughter Mary Cole & her husband Joseph.

In 1851, a "chinaman" probably working in the local pottery industry, living at St Leonards with Elizabeth, daughter Sarah, and his father William Peerless. In 1861, a house agent, at 1 West Hill Rd, St Leonard's with his wife Charlotte and niece Fanny Peerless. Will proved at London 12.6.1873 described him as a gentleman; Charlotte, his widow, & William Edward Skinner, lodging house keeper of Hastings, executors.

"Moved to London in the 1820s and married an engineer called James Lee. They settled in Southwark where they had nine children . . . James died in 1841 but Sarah continued to live quite comfortably with her surviving children" (Letter 5.5.1997 from Mrs Wendy Quade to L J Crowhurst; she is descended from Sarah's 5th child, Mary Peerless Lee (b.1833) who married a bookbinder Benjamin William Walker in 1855).
