In 1851 Census James was living at Cowden, with his wife and children James, George & Ann; in 1861 at Grove Cottage, Cowden with his wife, their children George, Ann & Ellen, and a niece Ann Reed (b.c1845, Edenbridge) a domestic servant; in 1881 still at Grove Cottage with his wife, their unmarried son Abraham, and a sister-in-law Elen Shirley (b.c1809, Lingfield, Surrey).

In 1891 Census she was living at Grove Cottage, Mark Beech, Cowden with her widowed sister Elen Shirley (b.c1810, Lingfield, Surrey "living on private means"); Ann was described as "Pensioner on an estate".

In 1871 Census he was a coachman at 7 Cross St, Hastings with his wife and 3 children, in 1881 Census at St Leonard's with 4 children. In 1891 Census he was a gardener living at 5 Shornden Terrace, St Leonard's with his wife and son Henry, with 6 boarders & lodgers; in 1901 Census at the same address he was a jobbing gardener, living with his wife and grand-daughter Lily Edwards (b.c1894, St Leonard's). In 1902 he was executor of his mother's Will, described as a park constable.

In 1881 Census he was living at Hever with his wife Sarah Ann, their children Kate, Jane & George, and two illegitimate daughters, Nelly Smith (b.c1869, Hartfield) & E Smith (b.1874, Cowden). In 1891 Census he was at Buckhurst, Mark Beech, Cowden with his wife and their children Rhoda, Mercy, Alfred & Emily. In 1901 Census they were still at Mark Beech, with their son Alfred, and their daughter Kate's daughter Gertrude (described as their daughter in the Census, with Sarah Ann's age given as 45). ?Died 4Q1919, Sevenoaks age 73.
