When in 1827 at St Nicholas, Deptford John Peerless, a widower, married Frances Oak, a widow, both of that parish, one of the witnesses was John's brother Joseph, who had also witnessed the marriage of his daughter Elizabeth at the same church one month before. In 1841 Census John was an agricultural labourer living with Frances and their son John at Withyham, in 1851 Census a road labourer living with Frances at Crowborough Lane, Withyham; he was not with her in the 1861 Census.

In 1851 Census he was a railway labourer, living at 4 Belgrave Terrace, Tunbridge Wells with his wife and children William, John, Sophia & Henry. In 1881 Census he, a porter, his wife and daughter Alice were at Tunbridge Wells; also in 1891 when they had their son George's daughter Olive with them.

Will dated 18.9.1871 proved at Lewes 21.9.1894, probate to his widow as sole executrix and beneficiary.
