First a gardener at Palewell, at the time of his marriage a "merchants clerk". Joined a "cloth-shrinking" company, founded in 1689 by a Dutchman Bartholomew Vanderplank, and took over the firm in 1864, therafter trading as G R Peerless & Co.; the business prospered and later moved to 61 Old Street, EC. George retired in 1900 and the firm carried on under his sons, surviving until 1966, when goodwill, trade marks & plant were sold; Peerless St, EC was named after the firm. In 1881 Census George and his family were named "Pearless".

In 1901 living at Reigate with his wife & children Olive, Ethel & Godfrey. 20.10.1916 announced that his partnership with his brothers Frederick & George, trading as Peerless & Sons Clothworkers & Shrinkers, was dissolved; Frederick & George continued trading under the same name. Admon.with Will dated 31.8.1886 granted to Rev.Herbert R Peerless, Clerk, 9.1.1935, his widow being sole beneficiary.

Educ.Dulwich Coll. Joined Peak & Winch, tea merchants in the City, later apprenticed to architects, Barry & Hyams/Himes. Joined Frank Kleinwort, his brother-in-law, to make umbrella handles, walking sticks, etc, trading as Kleinwort, Peerless & Lewin of Clerkenwell, later Peerless, Lewin & Co. In Aug 1940 he and his sons Percy & Claude, trading as Peerless & Co, umbrella & sunshade manufacturers of Fouberts Place, W1, dissolved the partnership, Percy & Claude continuing. The firm prospered until sold, then closed down in 1972.
